An old friend of mine used to say: "the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing." In baseball, they say it a slightly different way: "keep your eye on the ball."
Either way, the lesson is the same. In challenging times, you need to stay focused on what really matters.
Everywhere I go, folks have the same priority - jobs. They want to see us get the American economy going. Yet, they are amazed by the disconnect in Washington DC. We've seen some token efforts in recent days. But, for months and months, Washington's liberal leadership has virtually ignored jobs and the economy. Instead, they remain focused on bailouts, a healthcare takeover and other philosophy-driven efforts to grow the size of government and re-shape America in the image of Europe's Socialist Democracies.
In contrast, President Ronald Reagan's response during the 1980's was to enact broad-based tax cuts and limit the size of government. These actions resulted in a booming economy and the greatest economic expansion in the history of mankind. We should observe these lessons from our past and enact policies similar to that of President Reagan.
The path to an economic comeback is lower federal government spending, tax cuts and putting jobs first. If you agree, we hope you join our team.

People are experiencing tremendous economic difficulties that cannot and should not be ignored. According to a recent federal report, nine months after Congress approved its $787 billion dollar so-called stimulus bill, the rolls of the unemployed have grown by millions and, by any measure, more jobs have been lost than created. Since the stimulus bill was enacted in February, nearly three million Americans have lost their jobs and the percentage of people who are without work has risen to 10 percent. The bottom line is we now have a much higher national debt and fewer jobs.
To jumpstart our economy, we need to stop the runaway growth of government, cut taxes and put jobs first.
Last week, we released a plan called "Jobs First, Jobs Now" that would help promote small business job growth. The plan includes: enacting broad-based tax cuts, an end to corporate bail outs, incentives for cheaper energy, controlling spending, using unspent stimulus dollars to pay down national debt, the creation of a district-wide jobs advisory council and restructuring the congressional office staff to hire a full-time professional devoted to utilizing the more than 340 federal economic development programs to help 5th District local elected leaders and businesses create jobs. If we learn from the past, we can improve America's future. Prior to today's crisis, our country faced two major economic downturns during the last century: the Great Depression and the recession of the late 1970's and early 1980's. The government response to the Great Depression was to increase government at a rate unseen in our country's history. Most historians agree that this expansion likely prolonged the crisis and actually made things worse.
In contrast, President Ronald Reagan's response during the 1980's was to enact broad-based tax cuts and limit the size of government. These actions resulted in a booming economy and the greatest economic expansion in the history of mankind. We should observe these lessons from our past and enact policies similar to that of President Reagan.

According to a recent federal report, “nine months later, with over $200 billion of stimulus funding already spent, the rolls of the unemployed have grown by millions and, by any measure, more jobs have been lost than created. Since the stimulus bill was enacted in February, nearly three million Americans have lost their jobs and the percentage of people who are without work has risen to 10 percent. ”

Thanksgiving Rich in History, Tradition
As we all learn in elementary school, the first Thanksgiving Day feast occurred during the harvest celebration of the Pilgrims and Indians in the autumn of 1621. Our modern celebration can be traced back to 1863 when President Lincoln became the first President to declare Thanksgiving Day a national holiday. The holiday has been a fixture of late November ever since.
Still, as we head into the holiday season, let's never forget that America is a blessed country that has faced big challenges before. There is nothing wrong with America today that cannot be fixed by all of the things that have been right about America for more than 200 years. The desire for freedom and the belief that government should not intrude on the everyday lives of its citizens are the very ideas that brought the Pilgrims to this land. These time-honored principles are the key to bringing prosperity back to our great country, and we cannot allow today's economic crisis to become an excuse to take our freedoms from us.
Working together, we can help the next generation of conservative leadership step up and make a big difference for our state and our nation. All we have to do is act. And, the time for action is now!
So, enjoy time with family and friends during this holiday season. Then, let's get back to work fighting the good fight and moving our country forward.

Last week, my first grade daughter appeared as an Indian in her school's Thanksgiving gala. All of the songs and costumes were great, but my favorite was a little song called: "Let's have a gratitude attitude!"
During the song, the students would sing the chorus "Let's have a gratitude attitude!" together and then one of the students would step forward to tell the audience something specific that they were grateful for. Answers varied from "my Mom and Dad," to "Jesus," to "friends" to "my goldfish."
It was all in good fun. But, the song reminds us all that Thanksgiving is a time to look past our struggles, thank the Lord and remember all of the small things that make our lives great.
For many, that will be a difficult challenge this holiday season. With double digit unemployment gripping many of our communities, folks are understandably concerned about our future. Make no mistake about it. These are challenging times. And, it will take a host of good decisions and a lot of hard work to get things turned back around.
Still, as we head into the holiday season, let's never forget that America is a blessed country that has faced big challenges before. After the results of last week's elections, conservatives and Republicans have many reasons to be encouraged. Republican victories in the Virginia and New Jersey Governor's races (two states President Obama won last year) make clear that the premature obituaries of the national Republican Party were way overstated.
Make no mistake about it, from town halls and tea parties to last week's election results, Americans reject big government and the big spending policies of Washington DC's liberal elites. Despite our current economic woes, Americans understand the importance of limited government and the freedom and liberty it brings. We don't want more government. We want leaders who understand it is the American people, not government programs, that will lead America's comeback.
As is so often the case, Ronald Reagan said it best. In his 1981 address to Congress to promote his first Economic Recovery package, President Reagan, said: "That's what makes us, as Americans, different. We've always reached for a new spirit and aimed at a higher goal. We've been courageous and determined, unafraid and bold. Who among us wants to be first to say we no longer have those qualities, that we must limp along, doing the same things that have brought us our present misery? I believe that the people you and I represent are ready to chart a new course.... We have much greatness before us. We can restore our economic strength and build opportunities like none we've ever had before. . . . All we need to do is act, and the time for action is now."
President Reagan's gave this 1981 address when the country was dealing with double digit inflation and home mortgage interest rate of around 15%. More than 8 million Americans were unemployed. Still, President Reagan saw a better future. And, although it took a couple of years to get there, Reagan's principled leadership jump-started the greatest economic recovery in world history- an economic expansion that lasted for most of the next 25+ years.
President Reagan understood the value of freedom. He understood the importance of limited government, lower taxes, hard work and personal responsibility. He understood that given the tools they need to make their own lives better, Americans will step-up to the challenge. And, he understood, if we work together, America's future will always be better than her past.
There is a lot to complain about in Washington today. From a healthcare takeover to card check to cap & trade to trillions in additional debt, our Nation's current leadership keeps turning left when we need to turn right. The American people are worried because they know that we can't tax our way into prosperity or spend our way out of debt.
But, as we stand up for freedom, let's stay focused on the future. We must continue to put forth positive solutions and remind our friends and neighbors that freedom, liberty, lower taxes and limited government are the keys to jump starting our economy and creating jobs.
That's why I am running for Congress, and that is why we need your help. Working together, we can make a difference for our country. We can fight for our freedoms and stand up for the future economic opportunities of our children and grandchildren. If you agree, we hope you'll join our team.

More than 500 Hoosiers Step Forward to Support Luke Messer's campaign for Congress
(Fishers, IN) - Coming on the heels of the 3rd Quarter Federal Election Commission finance reports showing Republican 5th District Congressional candidate Luke Messer with a strong fundraising lead over the field of challengers to incumbent Congressman Dan Burton, Messer announced today an impressive list of elected officials, Party leaders, and general endorsements - more than 500 in all.
Messer endorsements include State Senators, State Representatives, County Sheriffs, County Prosecutors, County Commissioners, City and County Council Members, City and Township Officials, the State Commissioner of Labor, and former Indiana OMB Director and Secretary of Commerce.
Party endorsements include Indiana Republican National Committeeman, former State Republican Chairman, former State Republican Vice Chairwoman, former Republican National Committeewoman, current and former Republican State Committee members, current and former College Republican officers, and current and former County Republican officers.
All told, the list includes over 100 endorsements from elected officials and Republican Party leaders and more than 500 general endorsements. In recent weeks, Messer has also announced more than 680 individual contributors to his campaign and more than 1500 members on his campaign Facebook page.
"We're excited by this growing team of hundreds of Hoosiers ready to change leadership and build a brighter future for the 5th Congressional District, our country and the Republican Party. GOP needs to settle on a challenger to Burton in 5th District race

For a few months, the crowded field in the 5th District Republican primary didn't seem to hurt the four men taking on incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Burton.
If anything, the roster of top-tier challengers drew attention to the race much earlier than otherwise would have been the case and underscored just how tired many Republicans have grown of Burton. Even in a year with no candidate elections in Indiana, many people have paid attention to this 2010 race.
The campaign is unusual; sitting members of Congress rarely face serious challenges from within their own party. The emergence of four intraparty challengers reveals just how vulnerable Burton is considered after years of embarrassing escapades -- from his poorly timed golf trips to his wild conspiracy theories...
... Luke Messer: The 40-year-old former state lawmaker from Shelbyville has been seen from the start as the lead challenger in this race. He's raised the most money among those not named Burton and has built a solid base of support. Thoughtful and politically savvy, he is the challenger with the best chance of defeating Burton and then emerging as a strong member of Congress.

"The bottom line is that this is a true grassroots team effort," said Messer, who was recently a partner at the Indianapolis law firm of Ice Miller but is now practicing law at his own law firm in Shelbyville. "Hoosiers are coming together and stepping forward to make a difference for our state and our country."

But today, our Party faces similar challenges nationally. The Republican Party suffered significant losses in 2006 and 2008. We lost elections, in part, because we lost credibility on fiscal issues, and we lost our way.
It is time for new leaders to step up!
That is why I am supporting Luke Messer! Luke is a proven leader, and he is the only candidate who can truly represent the next generation of Republican leadership for our District.
As State Republican Chairman, I saw first-hand that winning tough races requires candidates who possess a unique combination of leadership skills, fundraising ability and grassroots strength. Luke Messer has all of those characteristics.

Leadership starts with credibility. That is why it was particularly disappointing to watch President Obama's speech to Congress last week. His speech was eloquent, but lacked the straight talk needed to lead America toward real health care reform.
Let's start with two facts that are hard for anyone to dispute.
First, while we have the best quality health care in the world, skyrocketing costs have jeopardized America's health care system and it is badly in need of repair. Over the last ten years, annual health insurance premiums have jumped 119 percent. And, every family knows it. Simply put, we have to find ways to help families get and keep affordable health care coverage.
Second, in town hall meetings across America, citizens have expressed genuine concern about a potential government takeover of healthcare. Folks are worried about their personal healthcare freedoms. Many Americans are rightfully concerned about the impact of increased deficit spending, and they know there are two results you can count on from a completely government-run system: lower quality care and rationing of care. That's what has happened in every country that has tried such a system.
The President had an opportunity to acknowledge these facts, shoot straight with the American people, and lead.
Instead, he took the political route. The clearest example was the President's claim that his plan won't add "one dime to the deficit now or in the future." Almost no one in America actually believes the President can add millions of new people to the federal healthcare system without spending more money. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office says the current healthcare bills will increase the budget deficit by at least $239 billion over the next 10 years, and by trillions of dollars in the decades to come. Yet, the President insisted on making this claim.
Despite the current poisoned environment, there remain real opportunities for consensus reform. These reforms include: requiring health insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, incenting preventative care, making health insurance policies portable from job to job and state to state, and providing small businesses with tax credits to help provide health coverage for their employees.
But, it will require straight talk, not partisan politics to get us there. Several hundred years ago, our nation's first President became famous for always telling the truth. If there is any chance to achieve bipartisan healthcare reform that best serves the American people, we must begin with an honest discussion.

That's why I spoke out this week when I received a 4-page, full-color, glossy mailing sent to 5th District constituents by Congressman Dan Burton - at TAXPAYER expense! (Click here to see our press release.) In fact, recent news reports rank Congressman Burton in the Top 5 spenders in Congress on taxpayer-funded mail.
Our Congressman touts himself as a strong fiscal conservative, but when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars on extravagant mail that benefits his re-election campaign, Congressman Dan Burton's record speaks for itself. In the past couple years Congressman Burton has spent over $300,000 in taxpayer money on this perk.
Franked mail can serve a legitimate purpose to inform constituents about events and issues facing Congress, but this is over the top. With our Federal deficit skyrocketing, Congressman Burton could surely communicate with constituents at a lower cost to them.
I believe voters are tired of elected officials who put their self interest ahead of the public interest. It's time to elect leaders who will walk the talk.

Last month, our campaign set a state fundraising record. With the help of more than three hundred supporters, we raised more money in our first quarter than any Republican congressional challenger candidate in Indiana history. We are also grateful for the grassroots support of hundreds of volunteers who have signed up to help our campaign. We already have over 1,200 Facebook friends, and many of them have recently joined us at parades, festivals, and fairs across the district.

A few months back, the President launched his plan - drawing concern from conservative Democrats and Republicans alike. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, ObamaCare would cost $1 trillion over 10 years, but cover only about one-third of those now lacking health insurance.
In recent weeks, Washington's liberal leadership has tried to rush a plan through Congress. But, at least for now, commonsense has prevailed and the debate will be delayed until the end of the Congressional August recess.
Make no mistake about it, the core of liberal Washington's strategy is a government-run health insurance plan that would put America on the path toward a completely government-run healthcare system. Despite his protests to the contrary, the President's plan would control costs by offering a one-size-fits-all benefits package that would limit medical treatment options. Over time, the plan would cause employers, especially small businesses, to stop offering private health insurance coverage forcing millions of people into the government plan. In the long run, enormous deficits caused by projected shortfalls in the plan could even endanger Medicare.
Still, nearly everyone recognizes that something needs to be done. While we have the best quality health care in the world, skyrocketing costs leave America with a health care system that is broken and badly in need of repair. (Click here for quick facts on the rising cost of health care.)
Families are worried because they know that one major health incident can wipe out a lifetime's worth of work and put a family on the brink of bankruptcy. Small businesses are worried because health care for employees is an ever-increasing expense. And, health industry leaders are worried because of all the uncertainty surrounding a government takeover.

Six months into this liberal domination of Washington, a pattern is emerging - they spend too much, tax too much and borrow too much. And, so far, they see every American crisis as an opportunity for another big government program.

We kicked off our campaign in early April at a small business in Shelbyville with nearly a hundred of our friends and neighbors in attendance. Over the past ninety days, we've met hundreds of new friends and been honored to receive the endorsement of several elected and community leaders.

Decades ago, many of us stepped forward in a Primary to help Dick Lugar, and the results were kittle buttonhistoric. Just a few years ago, leaders like you stepped up to support Mitch Daniels in his Primary. As a result, Mitch won, and his unique brand of "can do" conservatism has achieved unparalleled accomplishments for our state.

That's why, as a Hoosier, it was hard to miss the irony in President Obama's announcement this week that his Administration wanted to implement "pay-as-you-go" federal budgeting. The idea behind PAYGO LM-laughingis simple: new spending or tax cuts must be balanced out by spending cuts or tax increases elsewhere in the budget.
For this President, it was a remarkable pronouncement. To quote the Wall Street Journal, "Coming after $787 billion in non-stimulating stimulus, a $410 billion omnibus to wrap up fiscal 2009, a $3.5 trillion 2010 budget proposal, sundry bailouts and a 13-figure health-care spending expansion still to come, [the President's] latest vow of fiscal chastity is like Donald Trump denouncing self-promotion." The truth is we are witnessing the greatest peacetime spending binge in U.S. history. The federal budget is expected to run a record $1.84 trillion deficit this year and nearly double - that is right, double - our national debt over the next eight years. This year's deficit is nearly 5 times the prior record deficit of just a year ago. (For a few more thoughts on PAYGO, click here.)
We can and must do better! The only way out of this mess is true fiscal restraint and polices that lead to job creation and economic growth. That has been our approach in Indiana in recent years.
As a former State Legislator, I am proud to have served on the House Ways and Means Committee and in House Leadership when Governor Daniels came to office in 2005. Then, working together, our state's fiscal leadership crafted the state's first balanced budget in eight years - a budget that, without a tax increase, turned a $600 million deficit into a $300 million surplus in a single year.
We are going through tough times right now in Indiana. But, from a budget perspective, we are doing much better than most states because of the fiscal restraint shown in the prior four years.
It's really pretty simple. Hoosiers know that America cannot spend itself out of a recession or borrow its way out of debt. We also know that raising taxes in a recession is the worst thing government could do to get our economy turned around.
