Hoosiers expect their leaders to shoot straight with them. We're not fond of elected officials who say one thing and do another.

That's why I spoke out this week when I received a 4-page, full-color, glossy mailing sent to 5th District constituents by Congressman Dan Burton - at TAXPAYER expense! (Click here to see our press release.) In fact, recent news reports rank Congressman Burton in the Top 5 spenders in Congress on taxpayer-funded mail.

Our Congressman touts himself as a strong fiscal conservative, but when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars on extravagant mail that benefits his re-election campaign, Congressman Dan Burton's record speaks for itself. In the past couple years Congressman Burton has spent over $300,000 in taxpayer money on this perk.

Franked mail can serve a legitimate purpose to inform constituents about events and issues facing Congress, but this is over the top. With our Federal deficit skyrocketing, Congressman Burton could surely communicate with constituents at a lower cost to them.

I believe voters are tired of elected officials who put their self interest ahead of the public interest. It's time to elect leaders who will walk the talk.
